I'm still not quite sure if I'm trying to escape the criminal masterminds, or if I'm going to become one of them and use my new skills to extract a 5,000x max win. The training begins now as we dive deeper into this cryptic system full of modifiers and bonuses.
Deadcode uses a cluster pays format and you can pick up wins when you land a minimum of three symbols. The payout values are quite small and the max you can hope for is 5x for a group of five or more of the highest paying symbols. The symbols must be connected horizontally or vertically.
As wins are collected, they get multiplied by the global figure and each winning cascade will increase this by +1. There is a collector for each column and these are linked to a subroutine feature.
When you collect wins, the winning symbols that match the collector type fill up the collector meter. The result is some subroutine features and these include mystery symbols, symbol removal, symbol upgrades and an expanding grid.
When there are no more wins available, you might get a breach feature where non-winning symbols get replaced with new ones to chase a win. Wild symbols are also available.
You can take on a regular bonus and a super bonus in Deadcode and you'll need three bonus symbols to trigger either of them. At least one of them must be a super symbol to get the super version.
You have seven free spins and the grid expansion, global multiplier and collector meters remain between spins. In the super game, your free spins are guaranteed to give you between one and five subroutine features. Outside the UK, you might not want to stick around and wait for bonus symbols, so you can pay 100x or 250x to trigger the regular and super bonus games.
Each of the reels has a collector meter and a symbol associated with it. As you collect wins across the grid, the matching symbols will help boost this meter and eventually release some features. Highlights to watch out for are mystery symbols, symbol upgrades, symbol removals and grid expansion.
With three bonus symbols, you can unlock seven free spins and if one of those is a super bonus symbol, then you get the super version. As you spin, the symbol expansion and global multiplier will remain persistent throughout, and if you play the upgraded game, you'll experience a number of subroutine features with each spin.
Admittedly, Deadcode did make me wait for a little while to see any special wins during the base game, but the great news is that they can start to build up and fill up those meters, all the while benefiting from the global multiplier. All of the subroutine features can deliver a fantastic payout at any point. Naturally, this gets even more attractive if you make it through to the bonus game, and if you can play the super game, then the guaranteed extra features are worth having. The max win is quite a modest 5,000x, but I'm in no doubt that this will drop at some point.
A futuristic, cryptic vibe is how Deadcode presents itself and you get the sense that there's a slight Oriental feel to it as well, thanks to the Mahjong-style symbols. A few flashes of blue neon lights and some skyscrapers in the background come together with the hacker animations and a tense soundtrack.
Deadcode probably won't go down as an ELK classic, but it still has a lot going for it. If you're intrigued by a little computer hacking and the idea of society being brought down by clever coding, then you might feel yourself immersed in the scenery quite nicely. In terms of payout potential, these features are all capable of delivering something big at any point, and they're quite entertaining to watch at the same time.
