When the original San Quentin slot came out, nobody was prepared for what Nolimit City was about to throw at them. We've got used to the idea now, and we even revisited the theme in 2024 with San Quentin 2 Death Row – this was a huge hit for the developer, and there's a lot of pressure on the latest release to live up to expectations.
In San Quentin Manhunt, you need to try to escape through a sewer at some point, but first, you must land some regular wins. This happens in a scatter pays formation with seven or more matching symbols landing anywhere on the grid. The highest payers will get you up to 3x.
Not the biggest wins then, but there are some multiplier blocks, and each reel has its own multiplier that applies to each symbol that takes part in a win. It increases each time this happens and arrives at a maximum of 128x.
Above and below the reels are some enhancer cells, and when you unblock them, they give you a prisoner symbol or a feature symbol. Feature symbols could be the Cake Buster, which unlocks a locked position on the reel and reveals a wild, or xWays, which transforms prisoner symbols into up to four of the same. xSplit will double all multiplier block values, yard dealer will select an object symbol and convert it into a higher paying one, and a cell search will collect the lowest paying object symbol and add a multiplier to it.
You have the Sewer Escape to reach for with three bonus symbols taking you down into the dirty tubes. Before it begins, the setup mode will choose your number of spins, and all locked reels get a random sticky multiplier of up to 16x. You have a minimum of six spins, the multiplier blocks don't reset between spins, and you can pick up more spins as you play.
Four scatter symbols will trigger the Manhunt Spins and beyond the benefits of the basic bonus game, you now have multiplier block values capped at 512x. The corner enhancer sells unlock as soon as all the lock positions on the reels are unlocked.
Heading directly to the bonus game will cost players outside the UK 100x and 500x.
Above and below each reel is a locked enhancer cell, and these can be unlocked to show high-paying symbols or feature symbols. The features can unlock reel positions and provide wilds, transform various symbols into higher-paying ones, offer more of the same symbols in the same position, and collect low-paying symbols and add multipliers to them.
The free spins bonus is an unknown entity until the setup mode tells you how many spins you're going to get. You have a minimum of six, and all locked reels get a random sticky multiplier. In the basic version, the multiplier block values are capped at 1281x, but if you can make it to Manhunt Spins, then those figures can rise to 512x.
Don't expect this San Quentin Manhunt grid to fully populate with each spin, because you've got those modifiers to aim for as you attempt to unlock various sections. The multiplier figures are a must, and without them, your balance is going nowhere. Luckily, Nolimit likes to keep the entertainment rolling, and that means producing wins at the same time. It didn't take me long to see prisoner symbols and features appear in those locked areas, and occasionally, over 30x flew through these bars and made its way to my bankroll. The bonus games improve matters with those persistent multiplier figures, and the 100x buy-in is quite tempting.
We have a bird's-eye view of the prison camp with barbed wire outlining the grid, and those locked enhancer cells add to the feeling that we're trapped inside this game until we can make it beyond the prison walls. It feels fairly similar to the first two games, and the soundtrack is just as gritty. You can try and make it out alive on your mobile phone, desktop, or other compatible devices – it looks good either way.
San Quentin Manhunt doesn't quite live up to the Death Row version in terms of entertainment, design or stats. The max win back then was 200,000x, and it just felt like the entertainment came more frantically towards your screen than it does this time around. In its own right, this slot still has a lot to offer, and if you'd never heard of its predecessor, then you'd be incredibly impressed. Go play it, and try out the other two, so you can see which you prefer. All three are amazing games, in my opinion.
