Big Bonanza beginnings
In slot games, the term ‘Bonanza’ was first associated with Bonanza, by Big Time Gaming. Before long, it had come to represent a style of slot game, one which Pragmatic Play was quick to adopt.
‘Bonanza’ has effectively become a shorthand used to describe games that are atypical in some way, and that offer more exciting gameplay than basic slots. This tends to involve things like rich bonus features, lots of paylines, fast-paced gameplay and big win potentials.
A winning formula
Even Pragmatic Play couldn’t have known how well the series would go down with players. It had struck gold with its combination of high volatility levels, very high RTP rates, generous bonus features and casual, easy-to-learn gameplay. In addition to this, the games all boast high production values, in true Pragmatic Play style.
Thanks to the approachable and accessible nature of the first game, it had serious mainstream appeal. And, thanks to the generous metrics (especially the high RTP rates), experienced players were willing to have a few casts too.
Another reason for the success of the series is how effectively it balances familiarity with progression. Each new Big Bass title tends to build on what came before, refining the existing mechanics rather than discarding them altogether.
This consistency helps explain why the series has retained its audience so well. Rather than constantly reinventing itself, Big Bass Bonanza evolves in small but meaningful steps, ensuring that returning players feel comfortable and at home.
Sequels come thick and fast
The first game in the Big Bass Bonanza series was so successful that the following year players were treated to not one, not two, but three sequels. Clearly Pragmatic Play was doubling down on the fishing theme, and each one was a hit.
First came Bigger Bass Bonanza with more vibrant graphics and an improved win potential. After this, Big Bass Bonanza Megaways added the Megaways mechanic, boosting the number of ways to win to 46,656.
Next came Christmas Big Bass Bonanza, which kept the uncomplicated gameplay and high win potentials, adding a festive spin.
Since, many of the Big Bass Bonanza games have incorporated seasonal elements without feeling like cheap re-skins of the original. Examples include Bigger Bass Blizzard Christmas Catch, Big Bass Halloween and Big Bass Christmas Bash.
Another important entry was Big Bass Splash, which remains massively popular and was voted Game of the Year by players at the Slots Temple Awards.
A landmark series
Within the space of just a couple of years, Pragmatic Play had formed Reel Kingdom specifically to create the Big Bass games, and produced a whole school of titles. In its relatively short life, the series has had more than 30 additions.
Reel Kingdom and Pragmatic Play continue to release Big Bass games, including both seasonal offerings such as 2025’s Big Bass Halloween 3 and others that introduce characteristically inventive new mechanics, like Big Bass Reel Repeat.
Pragmatic Play is now one of the biggest slot developers in the world, producing high-quality games with broad appeal. Its games are beloved by players, and the developer itself has won huge numbers of awards.
This success is largely thanks to a handful of incredibly well-designed slot series, including the John Hunter, Sweet Bonanza and The Dog House series, as well as – perhaps most importantly – the Big Bass Bonanza series.
As well as establishing Pragmatic Play as a big hitter, it’s safe to say that the Big Bass Bonanza series has secured a place in slot game history.
