The best way to grab a big win in this game is to get your finger on the trigger and hope that the VS symbol lands. These duels will bring multipliers worth up to 100x, and that should get your balance moving in the correct direction.
Standard wins take place on 14 paylines, and the highest payers are worth up to 15x – you can get this for a group of 5 wild symbols and 5 VS symbols. As the latter falls, you'll see them expand to cover the reels, and a duel will take place between two characters. Each one has a multiplier assigned, and the surviving duelist picks up these additions that are worth up to 100x.
After that, there isn't much else to play for, other than your pride and a chance to head into the bonus round.
Playing for free is instantly possible if you are outside the UK, and this will cost 80x. A more advanced version with a duel spin bar that awards you free spins, VS symbols and nudges will cost you 200x. If you want to guarantee a VS symbol, you'll need to pay 60x.
Standard entry to the bonus game requires 3 scatter symbols, and you get an increased chance of landing the VS symbols. 4 scatter symbols will get you 8 free spins and a progressive duel spin bar that can award you extra VS symbols, nudges and free spins. This bar will take you through 4 levels as you play.
If you land 3 Hot 100 symbols at the same time, you get 1 free spin and continuous nudges until 100 wins are awarded.
These symbols have been used to great effect in many games, and not only from this developer. As they land, the 2 reels either side the symbol will expand into a duel reel, and a fight breaks out! Both contenders have a multiplier figure worth up to 100x, and the winning duelist will apply their multiplier to your wins.
The standard free spins game requires scatter symbols to get things going, or players outside the UK can pay 80x. You receive 10 free spins and you have a higher chance of landing the VS symbols. An advanced version is available with a special meter that takes you to different levels with nudges and extra spins.
It's great to see a little variety in this game, and by that I don't mean the VS symbols. We've seen them many times, but you won't come across this Hot 100 symbol very often. It gives you a free spin with 100 payouts guaranteed to come your way – what's not to love about that? The bonus game should bring bigger wins in theory, but don't think for one second that the base game duels can't bring you huge wins that can still top out at a max 15,000x.
As is usually the way with slots of this ilk from this developer, you find yourself lying on the ground, looking up at the reels with a bad man standing next to them. The sun is setting in this desert sky, and the guitar soundtrack should ease your pain as you lie there and await your fate. You can pick this up on your mobile phone as well and enjoy the scene at your leisure.
Buried by Night keeps a few safe mechanics that we've seen in this developer's repertoire several times, but it also adds a little extra spice with the Hot 100 symbols and a slight variation between the two bonus rounds. The base game is kept alive by the wild symbols and VS duels, and should keep you focused while you wait for the bonuses to arrive.
