As I said before, this game doesn't seem to offer a hell of a lot in the feature department but there is an opportunity here to ‘wow’ me with big win potential. Octoplay is keeping things incredibly simple with the familiar site of expanding wilds and a free spins bonus. There are 20 paylines making their way across this 5x4 set of reels with a group of three matching symbols being your minimum requirement to land a win.
The lowest paying symbols are, of course, the royal symbols and for a group of five of these, you can fetch up to 2.50x. Unfortunately, a group of three or four won't be enough to return your bet. The picture symbols are a little more eye-catching with payouts worth up to 30x available and then you come across some wilds.
Wild symbols and epic wild symbols will substitute for regular payers and also offer payouts up to 300x. They land and expand to cover the entire reel but quite why one of them is epic and the other isn't, I'm afraid I cannot tell you just yet. One explanation is that the epic wild does offer a slight difference during the bonus game.
Each time a wild symbol expands and creates a large substituting area, it also offers a respin to hopefully pick up another win. You can get up to three wilds and epic wild symbols landing during any spin and once the respin starts, you could have four of them in place.

Players who wish to reach that part of the game in a more natural way will need to see three scatter symbols landing during a base game spin. In return, you get 10 free spins and now you should see the payouts grow thanks to a progressive multiplier. It begins at x1 but with each spin or respin, the multiplier will increase up to a maximum of 25x.
The wild symbols continue to expand and now you see the epic ones adding an extra free spin. Presumably, that is the only reason why they are different to the standard wilds. Three scatter symbols will retrigger the feature with another 10 spins making their way to your tally.

During the free spins game, there's a multiplier present and it starts with the standard x1. Each time a spin takes place, the multiplier grows and could reach a maximum of 25x. I kept hitting the spin button and hoping for bigger wins to come my way but I feel like this could be in line with the definition of madness. Despite the expanding wilds, I struggled to get anything over 10x sent to my balance. The bonus game offers the progressive multiplier and should produce some decent payouts by the end of your free spins, but it will all depend on where those wilds land. An expanding wild on reel five isn't usually a lot of use to you. The max win of 20,000x seems wildly overzealous and if that ever drops, I'll eat my hat!
Good old Anubis has provided slot entertainment for several years now and it doesn't look like he's hanging up his boots anytime soon. This half-man/half-dog figure doesn't seem to do a lot of rising despite the game's title, but the fire burning below the grid may offer us a hint as to where he came from. Lanterns burn to the side of the game area and the general background is quite pleasing on the eye and simple at the same time. The soundtrack is, perhaps, exactly as you would expect. It didn't take more than a few spins to get my head around everything that was going on in Anubis Ascension and for some players that may be a huge benefit. For others, it's going to feel like an all too familiar return to slots that simply don't dare to push beyond the boundaries that are already in place. The stats are pretty good on paper but I really can't see that max win coming home anytime soon for anyone. It's not a bad effort but I don't think it's going to get many excited unless they are new to slots and looking for something quite simple to ease them in gently.
