What’s Up Witches? Review

Shut up! You’re hilarious! These valley girls might get annoying very quickly, unless they conjure up some big spells to land huge cash prizes. I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt and see what they can do, are you?

Gameplay & Features

Loading up this game takes you into a world of enormous winning possibilities thanks to over 20,000 ways to win a prize. The most basic returns will come by landing a group of three or more matching symbols, and the lowest payers are the blue gems with a group of six of these fetching you 0.60x. Wild symbols will get you the best payouts of up to 5x.

Symbols in winning combinations will disappear from the grid and an avalanche of new ones will take their place. This continues until no more wins follow in the same sequence.

There are nine spells available in the arcane feature and these will improve the grid and hopefully add some prizes to your pot. You could get three spells on the reels at any one time, and they get activated when a special symbol appears on a horizontal row – some of these might be super versions. The super activator symbols will bring all spells on the reels to life, regardless of where they are.

These spells will transform symbols into wilds, but each one will send the wild action off in a different direction. Some wilds can have multipliers worth up to x3.

Bonus Game

You need four or five scatter symbols to appear on the reels during the base game to get 10 or 15 free spins. Multipliers up to 100x can land at any time during the bonus, and you get introduced to the Magic Orb feature, which also has nine versions. Multiplier figures, collectors, upgrades, compressors and much more could enhance the fun. You can also pick up extra free spins thanks to this orb. Players outside the UK may decide to go straight to the bonus game by paying 100x.

Magic Spells

Thanks to the arcane feature, there are nine magic spells available, and they all bring wilds to the reels. They get activated by a special book, and if a super version of this book lands, then all spells will be activated. Each one of the spells will decide in which direction the magic will be deployed, and the grid eventually starts lighting up with wilds and wild multipliers all over the place.

Free Spins

You can grab some free spins and play 10 or 15 times without putting your hand in your pocket when four or five scatter symbols land. As you spin for free, multipliers will land on the reels, and these are worth up to 100x. A magic orb can deploy 9 features, and these will collect multiplier values, upgrade them, compress them and various other exciting modifications. You can also pick up some extra free spins.

Win Potential

With over 10,000x available in this game, you'll likely be hoping to see those wild modifiers magically make their way onto the reels. Without them, the base game is going to be quite a scary place to reside. There are some distinct benefits during the free spins bonus, and thanks to potentially large multipliers being manipulated by the additional features, you could pick up a big win here. The volatility is fairly high, so watch out for some quiet spins with little to no action from time to time.

Design

What's Up Witches is actually quite a decent-looking game, but it feels a little static. Around the outside of the game area, you can pick up a few spooky animations, but in general, it doesn't really come to life very often. The bonus game sees the cheesy dance music improve somewhat, but it isn't exactly a huge advancement. The whole game area changes at this point, and the excitement of those potentially large multipliers begins to build up. I landed 10 free spins, and after a few multipliers landed, I received an upgrade, and eventually, I walked off with a little over 40x.

Our Verdict

There are some clever mechanics lurking behind the spells, and the bright, colourful display may even seem like a strange contrast to the spooky theme, but it works rather well. The free spins bonus could create some massive payouts every so often, and even the base game is capable of keeping you biting your nails. What's Up Witches won't just appeal to NetEnt’s upper middle class customers, because there are enough powerful modifications available to keep everybody interested for a while.
