I'm going to level with you – I'm not a huge fan of card-based slots. I always find that developers try too hard to disguise the slot and it never comes together perfectly for me. Print Studios is one of my favourite game providers in the world, but even they are going to have to work extremely hard to impress me this time around.
The idea here is to make you forget that you're playing a slot and Print Studios has done an extremely good job. My main problem with these creations is usually that it feels painfully obvious that the card element is surplus and is only forming part of a tenuous theme link.
Credit where credit is due, I kept hitting the spin button as if I were playing a game of video poker.
You start with a 5x3 set of reels and various cards will land with the ability to pay you matching groups of three, four or five symbols. The highest payers can get you up to 5x. Symbol wins are very much in keeping with the slot format and you'll need them to match on adjacent reels, starting from the left.
Alteration cards might land instead of a regular playing card and these will create modifications to improve regular card values and switch things around to bring you bigger wins.
Three or more jester card symbols will trigger the evolving deck bonus and you're now play for free with extra spins available during the feature. Importantly, a set of symbol and alteration cards are given a deck upgrade before you play and a major difference between the bonus round and base game is that cards are reused between spins and alterations are permanent.
Alteration cards will make their way from the regular game area as they are dealt and land over on the left-hand side. As this occurs, you'll feel the force of the specific modifier that has graced your hand. These changes to the game area include upgrades for low-paying symbols, suit changes, cards becoming the same suit, duplicates of matching cards and the doubling power of the golden crow.
Three or more jester cards will trigger the bonus feature and now you get to see cards reused during spins and alterations remaining permanent until the end of the feature. Before you play, symbol and alteration cards are randomly chosen for an upgrade and you can also look forward to extra free spins throughout the bonus.
To get yourself towards that big 20,000x max win, you'll need to hope and pray for a few alterations along the way. Manipulating the game area is their job and if they work hard enough, you could see the high volatility reward you handsomely. My personal favourite was the Golden Crow, which doubles all the visible duplication numbers and has the power to bring some big wins.
There's a dark and magical feel to this card game with all of the illustrations perfectly created and even the background with other detailing is simply perfect. The designers over at Print Studios are possibly the best in the business and I'd recommend taking a few spins on this game even if it's just to see what it looks like. The dramatic piano loop goes hand in hand with the spectacular graphics and it also looks fabulous on smaller mobile phones.
As I suspected, Deck of Scurra isn't for me. However, I can see quite clearly how clever the idea is and how some of you are going to absolutely love this creation. The alteration cards offer moments of inspiration as they potentially change your fortunes. The bonus allowing for cards to be reused and offering permanent alterations really does make this a potentially valuable feature. It's one of those games that you're just going to have to try for yourself and ignore what everyone else thinks about it.
