Ugga Bugga is an incredibly simple slot with 2 extremely favourable selling points – a 99.07% RTP, and a chance to hold the symbols. These are two things that really come together in a slot game, so it’s certainly worth celebrating when it happens. However, I’m a sceptic, and I want to see for myself what all the fuss is about!
The first thing to make clear is that you aren't aiming for any bonus features in this game. It's all about the base gameplay, and that's nice in a world where a lot of the focus and win potential seems to have been sucked out of this part.
You have what appears to be two sets of 3x5 sets of reels, but they are actually one game area divided into 10. Each section represents one payline, so you have a chance to win once on each row.
The bottom left reel will spin as you first hit the spin button, and you'll be offered an opportunity to hold any of the symbols that you want to keep. The next nine rows will then spin through their offerings, holding the one symbol that you want to carry through.
To grab a win, you generally need three matching symbols to land, and the best payout comes from the wild symbol. If you are playing with the maximum bet amount and land three wild symbols, you pick up the game's 1,000x max win.
A combination of three symbols in any one symbol group will also fetch you a win. The groups are huts, drums, masks, and bowls. One, two or three of the tribal fighter symbols can also land a win, as will one, two or three wild symbols. If you don't play the maximum bet amount, the top win is worth 250x.
Other than choosing your bet total and spinning the reels, you only have one job to do. You wait for the first spin and decide which symbol to hold. That symbol will stay constant on each of the 10 rows, allowing you to create a winning combination in each segment of the game area.
Let's start this section off with something incredibly obvious that you can't ignore! The RTP is 99.07%. That means that the house keeps an incredibly small percentage of any cash that goes into this game, giving players a greater opportunity to keep that balance looking healthy as they play, and potentially win some cash. You might suffer a few losing spins here and there, but you generally see some payouts coming your way with quite a high frequency and of a decent level.
No matter how long I played this game, I never seemed to stray too far from where I started. Playing for smaller amounts will only unlock a top prize of 250x with each spin, but hitting the Bet Max button can increase that to 1,000x. If you choose 0.01 as the value for each coin, then you can select a minimum Max Bet (if that makes sense) of 0.50, so it isn't a crazy amount to work with.
There is something hypnotic about the background beat in Ugga Bugga – I’m fairly convinced that it’ll haunt my dreams tonight. The game is set somewhere in Africa, with drums and carvings to help set the scene, along with a few trees and vines in the background. It doesn't seem to age, and many modern developers would still be happy with creating something like this.
The 99.07% RTP isn't the only reason why Ugga Bugga is one of the best-loved slots of all time. It's a combination of things.
