Slots heavyweights

Originally founded in 1999, Playtech was an early arrival on the online gaming scene, releasing their first game in 2001. Now admitted to the AIM, the secondary market of the London Stock Exchange, Playtech has been valued at almost $1 billion. In addition to its own cutting-edge gaming studios and content Playtech licenses some popular Hollywood brands including Warner Bros. DC Entertainment, Paramount, Fox, NBC Universal, MGM and others.

The films and tv connection

Playtech has produced several film and tv tie-in slots including for such classics as Gladiator (a fan favourite since the game's 2009 release), Grease (a solid 4 out of 5 when reviewed) and The Mummy. Classic tv series The Walking Dead also gets the polished Playtech treatment as does Superman franchise film Man of Steel. But who can forget Breaking Bad? It’s a firm favourite at Slot Gods HQ so we were delighted to review and get Breaking Bad Cash Collect & Link onto our site a couple of years ago.

The sporting connection

The development team at Playtech are also clearly keen on their sports. A diverse selection of sports are represented in the Playtech portfolio. These include AP McCoy Sporting Legends, a tribute to the legendary Northern Irish jockey Sir AP McCoy. World famous cricketer Brian Lara also gets the Sporting Legends treatment, as does another racing hero, Frankie DettoriRonnie O'Sullivan: Sporting Legends is a tie-in with the great snooker player but if football is more your thing there’s Football Cash Collect to have a look at.

A couple of classic series

Age of the Gods (the first one was released in 2016) is probably what many slots players think of when they hear the name Playtech and arguably the most famous slot series of all time. The expansive series just keeps giving and giving – with no fewer than 27 of them featured on Slot Gods. This mythology themed online slot series has proven an absolute winner for Playtech. There’s also the KIngdoms Rise collection – of which there are 8 slots on Slot Gods. Kingdoms Rise’s unique features and mechanics enable players to move between slots while recording the progress of each session. There’s also the opportunity to earn and spend an in-game currency in the innovative Kingdoms Rise Feature Buy Shop. Kingdoms Rise is an immersive and innovative slot series – each slot having varying mechanics, bonuses and general features. Some feel like classic online slots, while others have mechanics such as cascading reels and cluster pays.

A bit of Playtech history…

It was colourful businessman Teddy Sagi who, with the growth of the internet in the 1990s, saw an opening for an online gaming company. And thus, Playtech was effectively born after Sagi pulled together a team of iGaming professionals and software developers in Estonia. Over the next few years Playtech signed an agreement that saw the first European land-based casino go digital. They also launched their bingo, poker and mobile gaming divisions as well as their hugely popular live casino.

For years Playtech dominated the market with their Marvel and DC-branded Superhero themed slots. But when Marvel was purchased by Disney, Playtech had to give up the IP as squeaky clean Disney are known to cull or object to anything that might ‘damage’ their reputation. Unfortunately for Playtech, gambling fell under that remit. The DC slots remain as part of the DC Super Heroes series of games but Marvel had to go. And in a masterstroke bid to replace the hugely popular Marvel Slots Playtech came up with Age of the Gods.

And some barely relevant but nevertheless interesting trivia...

In 2025, the Sunday Times Rich List estimated Teddy Sagi’s net worth at £5 billion. And, quite the business diversifier, Sagi also owns London’s famous Camden Market.
