Armed with some fiery Nordic blood, our chunky warrior looks set to respin his way to victory in this latest creation from Hacksaw Gaming. It feels like a slight change of direction for this developer who has been relying on a fairly familiar formula for a while now. I've got a good feeling that that's all about to change as we enter the world of Stormborn.
Stormborn provides a game area that might seem a little less epic than the theme suggests. You only have 14 paylines available across these reels but the paying symbols will make you feel right at home.
The royals can pay up to 2x and the picture symbols top out at 10x. A group of three, four or five matching symbols are necessary. Wild symbols substitute for the regular payers and you'll find these making an appearance during one of the bonus game versions.
Coin symbols will capture the imagination but you won't know why they are there until you see five of them landing during a spin. Some are bronze, and others are silver or gold. Five of these triggers a respin where the coin symbols now stick in place and you hope to land more coins and extra collect chests.
Symbol values are worth up to 500x and the collector chest will take these on board. Chests can also provide multipliers to boost the final payout by up to 20x. If you keep landing more coins, then the respins keep coming but if you don't, then you pick up the cash and head out of there.
3 or 4 scatter symbols present a choice of bonus games and even though technically there are four different standard games available, it is really just two plus an upgrade for each.
You need to decide between Stormbreaker and Wild Storm if you trigger the game with three scatter symbols.

This respin feature can appear during the base game or as part of your bonus game action. Five scatter symbols are the pinnacle with extra coins and collector chests.
Base game symbols don't represent huge payouts but they aren’t the worst by any means. I saw a few smaller wins that kept my balance looking pretty good while I waited patiently for some respins. When they turned up, I was lucky enough to see over 20x added to my account. The bonus games are essentially an extension of the base game but Hacksaw has done a good job of making it feel like a progression rather than a sideways move. The volatility is between medium and high, so you should see some attractive wins now and then.
You can't fault this game's design with its Nordic winter feel. As you may have predicted, the reels are set into a carved wooden frame and everything takes place on top of the snowy mountain. Stormborn offers a fun respins feature that breaks up the base game nicely and forms a coherent passageway into the bonus games. It would have been nice to see these features expand the respins idea a little rather than simply offering an extra modifier here and there. That is a minor quibble though, and on the whole, this is a good-looking game with an interesting setup and a chance to land some big wins.
