I didn't have the pleasure of reviewing this slot's predecessor but at least that means I'm looking at the concept with a fresh pair of eyes. This transient set of reels doesn't believe in rest with symbols constantly splitting and rows forever increasing and decreasing as you hit the spin button. Wild symbols play a prominent part and the max win would bring a smile to the Reaper's face, I'm sure.
There are some potential headaches coming your way if you aren’t used to slightly more in-depth slot mechanics – the expression no pain, no gain can be applied to this situation. There's nothing standard about this game and you'll soon see how the size of the grid constantly ebbs and flows, offering modifiers and various mini features will also enhance the entertainment value.
Play begins with four rows and there are always five reels. Wins begin on the left-hand reel and you need combos to form on adjacent reels. The most basic payouts make their way to your balance if you land a group of three royal symbols and for this, the return is 0.10x. Picture symbols can pay up to 2.50x.
These wins might sound small but they're actually quite decent when you take into account everything that’s about to unravel. Keep an eye on the wild symbols, which come in two formats. You either see a Phoenix Wild or a Reaper Wild and both of these will substitute for regular symbols and unlock a position on the feature row above. The Phoenix wild will also trigger a respin.
If these two symbols land next to each other, they'll battle it out and increase the multiplier of the winning wild. Unlocking feature row modifiers can be very beneficial as you see symbols split in various ways and potentially allow for large combos to form. Wild symbols may also get added to the reels if the right modifier is triggered and respins can occur. During any spin, you might see a random number of Phoenix or Reaper Wilds added to the reels.
Three, four or five bonus symbols will trigger the respins game and you can upgrade this if a super symbol lands on the last reel. The game continues with the same mechanic, allowing wilds to open up feature modifiers and potentially bringing respins as well.
The game starts with a Phoenix Wild symbol and this moves with each spin to hopefully grab you a win. If you play the super bonus version, you'll see all of the feature modifier rows unlocked.

Both the Phoenix and Reaper Wilds are capable of substituting for other regular symbols and unlocking positions on the feature row. The Phoenix is also able to award a respin. If the two meet on the reels, they battle it out with the multiplier of the winning wild being increased. At the same time, low-value symbols are removed for the next spin.
If the feature row is activated, various modifiers can improve your chances of landing a win. Symbols can be split in a number of different directions, which adds more symbols to a winning combo if connected. Phoenix Wild symbols can be randomly added as can Wild Reaper symbols. There's also a chance that every spin will take place with wild symbols locked on the reels.
Three bonus symbols trigger the free spins bonus with up to 10 free plays coming your way. The bonus game starts with a phoenix wild symbol to get things moving and this will move to a new position with each spin. Extra spins can be awarded and wild symbols continue to unlock feature row positions. The game can be upgraded if a super bonus symbol lands on the last reel – all feature rows are opened and activated.
Despite all of the modifications and other helping hands that this game offers you, the picture symbol wins are still offering fairly reasonable returns at all times. I saw wins of over 50x during the base game and these got even better as I made my way into the bonus and eventually walked off with 175x. The volatility is extremely high and the max win is 25,000x.
Dark, mythical and eerie are just a few adjectives I'd use to describe this game. The soundtrack follows suit and it looks great on a range of devices, including mobile phones. There's an obvious macabre feeling with the reels set in a graveyard, as you might expect given the game's title! The animations are smooth and constantly keep you on your toes, so there's no reason to get bored whilst spinning this one.
I couldn't tell you if Phoenix Graveyard 2 is better than the first slot in the series but I can tell you that this is a fantastic game. It doesn't stand still for long and it feels like the winning opportunities are never far away thanks to the constant manipulation by those feature symbols. There’s win potential in all areas and it has a generally high-quality feel to it. I think this one should be on your list of slots to play this summer.
