ELK is really sticking its neck out with this game (excuse the pun), producing just one modification throughout. Ok, maybe you could say there are two with a few wilds thrown around as well but it all feels a little pedestrian as we hit the spin button. Hopefully, I'm missing something and this animal is about to stamp out any original doubts.
So, it seems like things were a little lacklustre when I first opened this game up but I can see that there are a couple of stand-out moments that might help bring big wins and increase the entertainment level.
There are only 26 paylines in this game and they make their way across five reels. Wins are made up of matching royal symbols and pictures with the king lion fetching up to 10x. These wins can be helped along by regular wild symbols and multiplier wilds.
At any point, the spreading wild modifier might occur when a wild symbol lands on reel three. If this happens, it can fire out a few different wild symbols in other directions. If you get a complete line of these symbols, you'll win 25x.
A super spin can remove all low-value symbols for one spin and the star of the show is the expanding wild. When these land, they'll grow to cover the reel and either act as a wild or a multiplier wild. At the same time, they stamp their feet and bring a respin.
During the base game, you have the option to purchase a magic spin with two guaranteed wilds present. If you trigger the bonus game during your magic spin, then it's guaranteed to be the super bonus. 2.5x makes each spin more than four times more likely to trigger a bonus game and 5x makes each spin more than 10 times more likely to do the same.
The free spins bonus isn't exactly a contrast to the base game spins and you won’t find any changes. The scenery is a little different, and you don't need to pay for your spins – I feel like I’m missing something!
Outside the UK, players can pay 100x to experience this bonus limp it's way onto the screen and 500x gets a super bonus. The difference is that each spin guarantees between one and four expanding wild symbols. For everyone else, you need three regular bonus symbols to trigger the standard game and one of them must be a super symbol if you want to play the super version.
These chaps are fairly self-explanatory but there is a little twist. When they land, they grow and cover the reel and they might produce a multiplier at the same time. The character will stomp its hoof and offer a respin with the wild staying in place and potentially landing you another win.
There are two versions of the free spins bonus with a standard and super option. Players outside the UK can purchase both but otherwise, you need scatter symbols to land. Not much changes during the bonus game but at least you aren't paying for your spins!
You often assume that a bonus game is going to produce much larger results and with ELK, that's normally true. This time around, it feels like the bonus is slightly missing a trick with a lack of energy and big wins throughout my session. I'm never in any doubt that the max wins are possible with this developer, so I'm sure somebody will walk away with 10,000x at some point. The medium/high volatility will hopefully be kind to your balance.
A stretchy giraffe wearing battle armour is quite a novel concept but I didn't expect it to come from ELK to be honest. They've added their signature design flair, which makes everything feel a cut above the rest and the sound effects are pretty decent too. It's not my favourite idea for a slot but they've taken a fairly odd idea and have created something that looks pretty good on mobiles and other devices.
Giraffalot probably won't go down in history as one of the best slots ever created but it's a safe interim number that will please a few of you. Personally, I was looking for something more from this developer as they’ve always got plenty more in the tank. A 10,000x max win is still pretty generous and that's always a good enough reason to take a spin.
