As Alibi loads up on your screen, your first impression might be that there isn't an awful lot happening. This is true to a certain extent but there is a mystery modifier that transforms both the base game and free spins bonus into something a little special.
The three characters above the reels are all suspects in this drama and each one has a little mystery up their sleeves. However, before you see the mystery symbols spring into life and offer us an insight as to who may have bumped off Margaret, you'll need to watch some standard wins unfold.
The picture symbols don't have huge returns and you'll only gain 1.5x if five of the top detective symbols land. The lower paying symbols are only worth up to 0.5x but wild symbols are a lot better and these will get you up to 2x. It's all because of the wild features and if these land regularly, you won't be thinking about the small, regular payouts.
The three mystery features are based around the traditional mystery symbol mechanic and you can see them performing adjacent, transforming or expanding actions.
The expanding version is the most obvious suspect who stands at around 5.6ft according to the mugshot at the top of the game area. It's strange that this short character was selected for the expanding feature as these symbols grow to cover the entire reel.
Anyway, the adjacent mystery symbol will convert adjacent symbols, either left or right, into the same symbol. Finally, the transforming mystery feature will pick a symbol and add it randomly to the grid.
Entering the bonus feature requires 3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols and for this, you get 7, 9 or 12 free spins.
Throughout the bonus game, you get to enjoy the detective's special multiplier prize and this grows after each spin. You could see up to x5 added to the progressive multiplier as you play. Mystery features continue to land and you'll see one of these with each of your free spins. Mystery symbols transform into random symbols and there are three different ways in which this can happen in this game. Some will expand to cover the entire reel while others will convert those to the left and right of the landing symbol. There is also a transform feature which covers one of the symbols from the panel and turns it into the same kind of symbol.

The overall game design is fantastic with an old school American lake scene that might have been set during the 20s and offers the backdrop for Margaret's murder. The three suspects are your mystery symbols and the detective plays the part of the multiplier. The soundtrack is quite eerie yet relaxing at the same time. It's simple but effective and it looks great on mobile phones too.
I think I liked the general feel of Alibi more than I enjoyed the features and it's not often that you face that conundrum. There is a big max win available and the mystery features seem to trigger quite regularly, so it's got to be a tentative thumbs up from me!
