You never know what's going to come from the crazy minds over at Peter & Sons! They come up with some of the strangest concepts in the industry and it's always exciting to see what they're going to release next. Zombie Road seems to be right up there with some of their weirdest work.
You don't have any fixed ways to pay in this game. Instead, symbols need to land on adjacent reels, starting from the left. The most basic combo is a group of three matching symbols and the royals pay less than the pictures. Pretty standard stuff so far as we move on to the base game modifiers.
The game is played on a 5x3 grid and winning symbols disappear with new ones joining in. There is a reel multiplier shown below each reel and this begins at x1 for each. As the characters for each reel begin to blast the old symbols from the grid, new ones will include at least one wild symbol and this boosts the multiplier below.
Wild symbols also substitute for regular paying symbols and some of them can be a double power wild, which boosts the multiplier by +2. If you pay 1.2 extra each time you spin, you'll double your chances of triggering the free spins bonus.
You need three or more scatter symbols to get the bonus game moving, or players outside the UK can pay 100x to get seven spins and 200x to get up to 11 spins.
The free spins are pretty similar to the base game, except now the multipliers will remain persistent and don't reset after a winning sequence comes to an end. Landing extra scatter symbols will grab you an extra free spin.
Each time a win takes place, the winning symbols disappear and the characters begin to shoot at the zombie images. A wild symbol will appear along with new symbols and boost the corresponding reel multiplier by +1 or +2. Wins will now benefit from this increased multiplier.
Three scatter symbols or a bonus buy-in will trigger the feature. The free spins are an extension of the base game but now you have the added bonus of the reel multipliers remaining persistent throughout. Landing extra scatter symbols will grab you extra free spins.
Each of the characters fighting the zombies has the power to bring big multipliers during the base game and bonus spins but it feels like you're getting more than you really are a lot of the time. The simple wins are pretty small and unless those multipliers climb high, your balance doesn't really benefit. You might find that you're luck improves during the bonus game but for me, the main game felt like a bit of a write-off.
You can always rely on Peter & Sons to bring a quirky creation to the market. This one features zombies making their way down the grid with concerned citizens attempting to blast them out of the way with various weapons. You get some good animations as the wild symbols drop and each character has their own signature move. It's fun and well thought out, and you can play on your mobile.
Zombie Road is a great idea and I love the way that the characters interact with the mechanic to bring wild symbols and multipliers. Unfortunately, the financial benefit of these modifiers didn't outweigh the entertainment value. Things can get a little better in the bonus game so keep your fingers crossed that you make it there before your balance gets bitten.
