Everybody loves a pirate story, well not everybody, but most of us. Push Gaming are one of the best of driving a slot through any given storyline and bringing it to life, so I've got high hopes for this one. Along with Casino Grounds, this developer has come up a new way to present some comfortable ideas that we've seen before and a couple of versions of a free spins bonus. I'm not expecting anything out of the ordinary but it could be quite entertaining.
Play begins with over 4000 ways to land a regular prize. This is thanks to the six-reel setup and matching symbols needing to land on adjacent reels, rather than fixed paylines. You can look forward to activator symbols, frames and bonus features, but first, you need to pick up a regular prize. This happens when a combo of between 3 and 6 matching symbols land and the lowest of them all are the five royals. For these, you will get up to 0.50x. The highest payout is a group of six pirates, which delivers up to 10x.
When you take a spin, you'll see frames landing on the reels and these nudge downwards as you spin. These special overlays can appear anywhere and they start off at the bronze level. If an activator symbol lands it will be in the form of a simple sync, coin or wild. These symbols transform all the frames on the reels into the same type of activator. The symbol sink delivers a random paying symbol across all frames and the wild activator produces wild. The coin activator will trigger the coin review feature. The frames spin through various possible outcomes with instant prizes, multipliers, collectors, bonus, super bonus and upgrader symbols all a possibility.
The instant prizes are worth up to 10,000x and the collector symbols will grab any other values together. Multipliers are worth up to x10 and the bonus symbols get you into the bonus game. The upgrader is symbol is only available during the bonus features and this upgrades a random number of frames to a higher level.
If you land enough bonus symbols during the base game, you'll get five bonus spins and three or more bronze frames get added to the game area. These frames are sticky during the feature and this will hopefully bring you some of those activator symbols and bigger prizes.
The super version requires two bonus symbols and one super bonus symbol to land anywhere on the reels and now you get eight free spins. Three or more frames with different levels get added to the reels and these also stay put. You can pick up extra spins as you play.
If the overpowered bonus mode gets randomly triggered, then you should be on for bigger handouts.
You can get straight down to business and go to the bonus game for 100x or enjoy the super version for 500x if you live outside the UK. You can pay 150x and take a gamble on the bonus outcome or go for the coin reveal feature for 500x.
If the symbol sync, coins or wild activator symbols land in a frame, they will transfer the other frames into the same type. You will either see all symbols converted into a regular payer or wilds. The coin activator brings on the coin reveal feature where you'll find instant prize coins, multipliers, collectors and more.
Regular or super spins can be triggered if you land 3 bonus symbols and now you get to see a number of special frames land and stay in place. They won’t nudge as you spin but it should give you a better chance of grabbing a decent payout.
The base game and the bonus game benefit from the frames but in some ways, I prefer them during the base game because they nudge down and could potentially stick around longer than your free spins. I didn't always grab an activator symbol though and they are largely useless until something special turns up. Once in a while, the high volatility will bring you a big win and it could add up to 25,000x. I took a chance on the coin reveal game for 500x and the result was unfortunately just 112x. Goes to show that these direct bonus purchases are a big gamble.
The graphics, animations and feature development all come together perfectly in this game, but you wouldn't expect anything less from a developer of Push Gaming's calibre. There are lots of things to keep your eyes occupied in both the foreground and background and with the special frames and coin reveal feature, you'll find more than enough here to keep you occupied. Mobile phones handle the imagery perfectly well, but I preferred taking a spin on my laptop to be honest.
Sea of Spirits is a fun game with a lot going on. The idea of the revealing frames is becoming quite a key component and the coin reveal feature will never go out of fashion. It doesn't feel like the max win is impossible but you're going to have to spin hard to win big. It could be a bit rich for some people's tastes but high rollers might find a lot of enjoyment here.
