I've always been quite critical of Play’n Go games in the past, because they seem to offer a lot on paper, but you never quite get down to the good stuff without putting up an almighty battle first. The win potential is theoretically there, but this often falls short as well. I'm hoping that this game will start to turn things around for me.
The basic info is that matching symbols need to land on adjacent reels, running from left to right. In return, you can pick up wins worth up to 5x for a group of six matching symbols. The wild symbols substitute for regular payers and also give you a 6x payout if you get a group of six of these.
There are coin scatter symbols that can land at any time, and if five or fewer of these land on the reels, they get collected into the Ship of Riches. One or more coins can be collected and may trigger the feature. At this point, you can look forward to any of the four bonus jackpots, which grow up to 1,000x.
4 or 5 coin scatters can fall, and the reels with no coin scatters will respin. If you get a sixth, then you trigger the Vitalian Lock. This is a respins feature where coin symbols will reset your spins.
Along with the respins game, you can also play free spins when three or more treasure chest symbols land.
You spin the wheel to determine how many spins you get and what the multiplier will be. You could have up to 30 free spins and a 5x multiplier. Special wilds can land with multiplier figures too.
Five or fewer coin scatters might land at any point, and these will be collected by the ship of riches. The size of the ship doesn't really matter because it's just there for entertainment value. One or more coin scatters can trigger this feature, and you get awarded a jackpot prize. The grand jackpot is worth 1,000x.
This feature requires four or five scatter symbols to land, and the reels with no coins scatters will respin. If a sixth coin scatter turns up, then you get to play this feature. It is a respin game, and coin scatters will reset your spins. Eventually, you'll pick up the value of the coins that land.
Three or more treasure chest symbols will get you a spin on the special compass. Now, you'll seal your fate where up to 30 free spins and a multiplier worth up to 5x can accompany you during the bonus. Throughout the game, special wild symbols with multipliers of up to 3x can also help out.
The symbol wins aren't enormous, but at least you can pick them up in over 4,000 ways. I witnessed the coin symbols landing fairly regularly, and on occasion, they did treat me to a feature. The base game wins were nothing compared to the free spins bonus though, where I picked up 20 plays with a 4x multiplier. At the end of the feature, I had nearly 200x in my balance! The max win here is 10,000x, but I don't think my spins put in a bad shift.
Sails of Riches is predictable in many ways, but this developer has done a great job of putting its own stamp on the genre. Lots of gold, fiery lanterns and a moonlit sky keep your eyes occupied while your ears take on a jolly sea shanty.
The main surprise with Sails of Riches was that I did manage to pick up a few half-decent wins. I'm usually left feeling a little annoyed by these games from Play’n GO, but my overriding feeling this time was one of indifference. It was neither good nor bad, and I know that probably isn't much of an accolade. However, it does have the potential to blast out a big win every so often, but I wouldn't spend too long trying to make it happen. Perhaps a couple of spins just to see if it shows you some love.
