Gopnik Review

Russian youth subculture isn't usually the subject of a slot theme, but Sneaky Slots doesn’t exactly go in for standard situations. Here, they take a look into the mixed-up lives of four teens who don't seem to have an awful lot going for them. But strangely, they could provide you with something extremely valuable.

Gameplay & Features

You have 40 paylines, and the basic wins are made up of royal symbols and pictures. The royals get you up to 3x, and the pictures pay up to 50x. Wild symbols substitute for those mentioned above and come in the form of a Babushka. She can mark up to four positions, and if a Gopnik lands on a marked position, they get a balaclava and a multiplier worth up to 50x!

If the burner phone rings, various symbols will turn wild, and there's also a borrowed xNudge feature from Nolimit City. This stacked wild symbol comes down one step at a time until it is fully in view and increases the multiplier by 1x.

Bonus Games

Three bonus symbols will enter you into the scratch card bonus, and you need to scratch out the wheel symbols to see what you get. If you reveal three dice, you go to the Street Roll bonus, and if you get three calculators, you go to the Kiosk Raid.

There is a super game that requires one super bonus scatter to land. You could pick up the max win of 6,666x from the scratch card as well.

The Street Roll bonus is a free spins game with an extra reel and Gopnik symbols on the first and sixth reels, holding dice tokens. If you drop a Gopnic with a dice token onto both of those reels, you pick up the Cheeki dice game.

You throw two dice, and you get a modifier corresponding to the winning number – this will be wilds or multipliers, and there is potential to grab extra free spins.

The Kiosk Raid is your chance to watch these youths get out of hand and make a play for some stolen property. You begin with three spins, and each time a label symbol lands, those spins are renewed.

The top row shows a random multiplier, and each time a label lands below a multiplier, it holds on to it until the end of the round. These are worth up to 100x. Other modifiers turn up in the shape of upgrades, collectors, and a chance to begin a super version of the respins game.

You can boost your chances of triggering the bonus games for 2x or 5x, and direct entry will cost 100x.

Street Roll

The 1st of the bonus games is a free spins bonus with an extra reel, and you might see some dice symbols appear. These can take you off to a feature within a feature, and now you can pick up extra wilds, multipliers, and possibly more free spins. A super version of the game gives you persistent multipliers.

Kiosk Raid

Three respins are yours, and you'll get a bet multiplier added to the top of each row. When you land a new label symbol below the multiplier, it'll pick up that figure and hold on to it to the end of the round. The kiosk lady can offer modifiers to bring you upgrades, double values, collectors and possibly the super version of the bonus. The same rules apply here, but you get an extra row of special symbols.

Win Potential

All of the features and modifiers turned up quite frequently while I was playing, apart from the xNudge borrowed from Nolimit City. I'm not sure why this was the case, but it was very elusive. The standard wins are pretty good, as long as you can get several picture symbols bringing you those gormless Gopnik faces! On another plus point, bonus rounds deliver more promise thanks to those modifiers, and both offered me fairly decent returns. The max win seems reachable at 6,666x.

Design

Gopnik creates a menacing atmosphere thanks to the imagery and sound effects. The whole setup feels hopeless, and you kind of feel for these youths who have wasted their lives with petty crime and other illegal activities. I’m guessing that there's quite a large program working away behind the scenes, because my laptop did struggle to keep up at times.

Our Verdict

I've always wondered how Sneaky Slots is going to distinguish itself from Nolimit City, but it manages to do so (just about) in Gopnik. Even though there is a borrowed feature, and the other modifiers can be found across both sets of games, you'll find a few individual touches that remind you that this developer looks to come out from the shadow of its big brother. They've captured the sentiment behind Gopnik perfectly with this slot, and the selection of features and modifiers works well.
