If you've never heard of Gonzo, then I'm not sure you can call yourself a slot fan! This little chap has kept us entertained for over 10 years and now he's back with another trip to El Dorado as he tries to grab some of that South American Gold and take it back to his Queen on the peninsula.
The setup is recognisable to fans of the series and others who have played a large range of slots over the years. Everything begins with a 6x4 game area but this can change quite quickly. Wins are made up of combos of three, four, five or six matching symbols and they only need to land on adjacent reels rather than fixed lines.
The lowest paying symbols are worth up to 0.50x but the high-paying picture symbols can pay up to 3x. Wild symbol substitute for all of those and they also have a payout worth up to 3x if a group of six of these lands on adjacent reels.
Such small payouts need a little assistance from some modifiers in a game like this and this comes in the form of the wild, colossal symbols and calamity wilds. There's also the small matter of an expanding game area.
Each time a win takes place, an extra row is added to the grid – this will increase the number of ways you can win a prize. Winning symbols disappear and new ones drop into place to create a cascade.
If a calamity wild symbol lands, it sends up to six wild symbols onto the game area and as the reels produce their cascading mechanism, they can help create and enhance wins. Some symbols are larger than others and this makes it easier to grab a payout.
Along with all of these other modifications, there's also a multiplier trail that begins at x1 and grows each time a win takes place. It resets back to x1 at the end of a winning sequence.
The free spins bonus comes in two formats and to trigger it, you need at least three scatter symbols. If one of them is a colossal scatter, then you play the super free spins bonus.
As you approach the regular bonus game, you'll notice that the win multiplier starts on x2 and this doubles each time a win takes place. After the sequence comes to an end, it resets to x2.
The super version of the game brings you a higher starting multiplier and this doesn't reset after a losing sequence.
To make each spin a little more likely to trigger the bonus game, you can double your base bet and 10x will get you a calamity wild. 30x expands the game area to eight rows high and delivers a calamity wild. The regular free spins bonus costs 100x and the super version costs 1,000x. These last two certainly won't be available in the UK, unfortunately.
Some wild symbols are fairly standard and will simply substitute for regular paying symbols. The Calamity Wilds, on the other hand, not only substitute for regular payers but they'll also add some extra power to the reels. You'll recognise these glowing symbols as they land and add up to six random wilds anywhere on the game area and remain in place for the next avalanche.
Three, four, five or six bonus symbols will trigger the free spins game. In return, you'll get between 10 and 20 free spins or super free spins. To start the super free spins game, one of the bonus symbols must be a colossal scatter. The game area can continue to expand with new winning combos and the multiplier also grows. In the standard bonus, the multiplier resets after a losing spin but the super bonus sees this figure continue to grow.
Each spin feels like it's filled with promise as the colossal symbols, expanding game area and increasing multiplier all regularly make an appearance. The Calamity Wilds are good fun, and they also have potential to grab you some decent wins at the same time. The free spins bonus didn't help me out much, or should I say it didn't help out my balance very much but the super version is by far the most valuable thanks to the multiplier that doesn't reset. If you're lucky, an incredible run of spins could take you towards the 15,000x win but keep a keen eye on the high volatility.
It's a very familiar vision that reminds me a lot of Gonzo's Quest Megaways which appeared over 5 years ago. The design team hasn't chosen to do much other than create a more interesting setup with the expanding reels and a couple of added graphics here and there. It wasn't a huge problem for me as I like the familiarity that this series brings and I think most players will agree.
