You won't hear any complaints from me when a developer decides to create a cluster pays game. If they want to throw in some random respins and a two-phase bonus game, then I'm definitely up for it!
With a 6x6 grid before you, you can expect to see lots of winning clusters but how big the payouts will be will depend on which symbols land. The lowest payers are the royals, but even these can grow to 20x and the picture symbols can fetch up to 150x.
These results are all boosted at any given moment by the wilds and wild multipliers. The wild symbols will simply step in and substitute for regular payers and the wild multipliers will improve those wins by a fixed quantity. As wins take place, the winning symbols disappear and new ones come to the grid. If three or more of those replaced symbols are wild, then you get a respin without needing to pay for it. Scatter symbols will also stick along with the wild symbols during your respins. If the same occurs during the first respin, then you keep going until you run out of luck.
There are two variations of the free spins bonus but they are pretty much the same apart from the super version which allows you a better chance to pick up big wins. Let me explain…
3 or 4 scatter symbols will trigger the standard respin game, but it isn't as straightforward as you might think. The wild respin theme continues but it is slightly different in that the scatter symbols that took you into the game will now stick in place and you've got three lives to try and land as many wild symbols and scatter symbols as possible.
The wilds will have multipliers applied to them and these are worth up to 100x. This is known as the collect phase and once you have a run of three spins without landing a special symbol, you'll move on to the final free spin. All of the wild multipliers will stay in place and regular symbols will now drop onto the grid – they all combine to create a final payout.
The super version is exactly the same but you get two chances in the collect phase. At the end of your bonus session, a chest will open and it might return you back to the collect phase for another go.
To make each spin five times more likely to trigger a bonus game, you can pay 3x and if you'd like three wild symbols with random multipliers guaranteed with each spin, you can pay 50x and you'll get your wish. Outside the UK, the bonus game comes at a cost of 100x, if you don't want to wait for scatter symbols, and the super version will cost 300x.
If three or more wild symbols are on the grid after a win, you'll grab another chance to pick up some payouts and potentially launch yourself into the free spins bonus. Wilds and scatters will both stay where they are and the rest of the grid will respin. As an added boost, any multipliers that exist on the wild symbols will double each time the respin takes place. The sequence can continue indefinitely as long as at least three wilds are on the grid.
Three, four or five scatter symbols will trigger the free spins bonus. Three or four of them will get you the basic version and you'll now see the game head in a slightly different direction. Scatter symbols stay on the grid for free spins while you collect as many wilds as possible. Multipliers are available up to 100x and if you go three spins without landing one, you move on to the final phase. A spin takes place with regular symbols dropping onto the grid to hopefully land you a big win.
Landing 5 scatter symbols will trigger the super version of the free spins bonus and you can now enjoy the collect phase once again but instead of just one set of three respins, you get two! After you've landed all of the wild multipliers available, you move to the second phase and a regular spin combines with all of the wild multipliers to award you your final payout.
The base game attempts to improve your balance as best it can with regular cluster wins combining well with the wild multipliers when they show up. It’s a fun and effective way to keep building on those same payouts. Moving into the bonus games, you'll find that the collect phase can prove to be incredibly lucrative if you pick up enough of the wild multipliers and then go on to have a decent spin on the regular grid. The direct buy-ins are quite expensive and even though I tried out the 300x Phantom Treasure, I don't think I would advise it! It is a bit of a risk.
We've put this game down as a horror/wild west theme but that's only because of the elements that it contains. The truth is that there's nothing scary about it whatsoever, even though there's a skeleton abandoned down there. The symbols are well thought out, if not a little obvious, and it looks great on mobile phones as well.
Gem Ghosts isn't the first slot to offer a collection phase but it is one of the more standout creations that I've come across. There's a chance that you can continue to land extra respins while you play the feature and that's not only a great opportunity to hit bigger and better payouts, but it also boosts the entertainment at the same time. It's a good effort from Bullshark Games.
