The original Das xBoot game set the scene nicely and grabbed the attention of our review team back in September 2021. Nolimit has picked up this classic, polished it off, and fitted it out with some top modifications. It's time to put this new machine through its paces and see if it's ready for war.
In its original state, you play across six reels with a fairly familiar setup that Nolimit adopts occasionally. The first and last reels only have two symbols, the second and fifth reels have three, and the two central reels have four rows.
The low-paying symbols won't return your bet, but some of the high-paying ones will. You can get up to 5x for six of the captain symbols.
The xNudge wild symbol is four rows high, and it nudges down until it's fully in view. As it nudges, it increases the multiplier by 1. These only land on the central reels. xWays is basically a mystery symbol that may have more than one symbol in each position, and the xBomb explodes all symbols, more or less. After the explosion, the symbols drop down, and new ones replenish the grid. The multiplier grows at the same time.
At any point, the third reel could stretch like a periscope and create extra wilds, and if you can build the torpedo under reels two to five, you'll see it activate and an additional wild dropping down to the torpedo area.
Three bonus symbols trigger 8 free spins, and now the periscope wild is active. It begins with the persistent multiplier that can grow, and every time a bomb lands, a multiplier is awarded. Four bonus symbols reward you with 9 free spins, and it begins with the torpedo tube ready for you to fill. Additional xWays symbols are present, and you'll see extra wilds and increasing multipliers.
Finally, five bonus symbols deliver 10 free spins with the periscope feature in play and the torpedo builder as well. Once again, the bomb symbols award multipliers.
A number of modifications can be purchased, such as the bonus boost for 1.5x your bet and the torpedo boost, which costs 20x your bet. Outside the UK, the basic bonus game will cost 80x and the other two cost 250x and 750x.
Landing a full boat that is two symbols wide can trigger the torpedo builder. The tube appears under the reels, and you have three spins to complete the manufacturing process. xWays fill the tube, and once it's launched, they become active. Some of these symbols will reveal other regular symbols, while others can be transformed into wilds and split in a number of ways.
You can play 8, 9 or 10 free spins when 3, 4 or 5 bonus symbols land. The basic version sees the periscope appear with wild nudges and a growing multiplier. Bombs can also bring additional multipliers and hopefully bigger wins. The mid-range game builds on this and starts you off with the torpedo tube, while the advanced game offers all of this and the periscope as well.
This is obviously a top slot, but can you land big wins? Of course you can! This is a Nolimit City game, and the chance to hit a huge win is always present. However, it does depend on how generous the game is feeling when you approach it. Like me, you might have to suffer some dangerously inactive moments where the features simply failed to deliver, but you know that the good parts are never too far away. Naturally, the developer wanted to incorporate the word ‘nein’ into this creation, so they went with a max win of 59,999x!
Visually, a game like this could be a nightmare with so many features taking place in such a small area. However, as we saw from the first game, it's perfectly possible for a developer of Nolimit’s calibre to deliver the goods. As you can imagine, you're sailing under the surface, and the game manages to capture the claustrophobic feel in a subtle way. The soundtrack is eerie, and they've completed the process of transfering this onto smaller mobile phone screens perfectly.
Das xBoot Zwei! is a genuinely uncomfortable game to play. That's not a criticism but rather an accolade. It means that this developer has captured the essence of this mission perfectly, and players are going to benefit from all of the time, effort and minute detail that has been added to this creation. The features fit the theme seamlessly, and there are endless moments where you stop to admire the design team over at Nolimit.
