Just for the Win is back with a big kraken in Dark Waters 2! This beast from the depths is on the hunt for big cash prizes and your job is to get there first. Thanks to three bonus game modifiers and coin symbols that can produce jackpot prizes worth up to 5,000x, it seems that you might have a bit of a head start.

Dark Waters 2 Review

Dark Waters first arrived on our screens back in February 2024 with three ways to trigger modifiers, four jackpot prizes and a chance to outwit Just for the Win to walk off with 5,000x of their cash. The outlook seems pretty similar in the sequel but will there be a twist in the tale to convince you to leave the original behind?

Gameplay & Features

Power Combo is back and that means that you'll have three types of bonus game modifiers to enjoy. But before you get there, you have a chance of landing jackpot prizes and regular wins with a fairly flexible payline structure.

Matching symbols must begin their combos on the left-hand reel and make their way over to the right on adjacent reels without a gap. The lowest paying symbols are the royals and a group of 6 of these will pay up to 1x. The picture symbols can deliver a win worth up to 2.50x.

Wild symbols will substitute for royals and picture symbols but they won't help with the money symbols or bonus scatters.

The money symbols are multipliers of your bet amount and the standard ones are cash prizes worth up to 10x. The four jackpots will pay between 15x and 5,000x. During the base game, these symbols will only appear on the first five reels and you need a collect symbol on the final reel to grab the prize.

Bonus Game

There are three modifiers to help improve your bonus spins and to trigger each version, you either need to collect four diamonds in the progression meter for the corresponding modifier or one diamond may randomly trigger the feature.

You get 10 free spins and you'll either be playing one, two or three modifiers as you spin for free. You can trigger another feature within the bonus game and this will also give you an additional three spins. One version makes the reels increase in size and you could potentially have a 6x8 game area with 262,144 win ways available.

The second stack feature makes collect symbols stack up to 5 high and each of these will draw in the value of money symbols. Finally, we have the golden reels where up to four reels can produce nothing but money symbols.

Dark Waters 2 - Money Symbols

Money Symbols

Money symbols land during the base game and the free spins bonus. The standard money symbols offer values worth up to 10x or one of the 4 jackpot prizes which can pay up to 5,000x. You'll only receive these prizes if a collect symbol lands on the last reel at the same time.

Dark Waters 2 - Free Spins

Free Spins

You can trigger any of the three variations of the bonus game or a combination of all three when you complete the progression meter by landing diamonds. Alternatively, a diamond may randomly trigger one of the games. You receive 10 free spins and if the giant reels are active, then you could have over 200,000 win ways. The stack collect version will offer up to five stacked collect symbols and the golden reels can produce up to four reels full of money symbols.

Win Potential

The base game doesn't offer huge basic wins but that's why the money symbols were invented! It's possible to land up to 5,000x on any spin and that will take you quite a way towards the 6,250x max win. With high volatility, it's not out of the question that this might happen occasionally. The flip side is that many base game wins will struggle to return your bet while you wait.

Design

Dark Waters 2 features a scene that no pirate ever wants to witness! A huge Kraken appears from the water behind the ship but hopefully, he's in no rush to steal any of your loot. A dramatic soundtrack plays out while you spin the reels and the three bonus modifiers sit above the game area. It's got an authentic pirate movie vibe going on and this should help get you in the mood as you wait for big wins.

Our Verdict

Dark Waters 2 is arguably an improvement on the first game but you won't find much to differentiate between the two. The max win may stretch a little further in this second version but you still have the same size jackpots and identical feature modifiers to look forward to. It's much of a much-ness for me, but Dark Waters 2 just nudges ahead slightly at the finishing post.
