The beauty of a mythical tale like Avalon is that it allows storytellers an opportunity to interpret it as they wish and the most inventive out there don't always stick to the rules. ELK has done a great job of using a popular theme and putting their own subtle spin on it – over the next few minutes, you'll see exactly what I mean.
As a cluster pays game, you'll need groups of matching symbols to land on the grid, touching vertically or horizontally. The minimum combo is a group of five matching symbols and the maximum can stretch to 16 or more. The lowest paying symbols can provide up to 5x but the highest payers may reward you with 50x when you have 16 or more in a cluster.
Wild symbols substitute for regular paying symbols and these can either be standard wilds or multiplier wilds.
As you hit a win, you'll see the global multiplier increase and this figure will continue growing by one or two steps and it is applied to any winning clusters that are created during a winning sequence. Winning symbols disappear and new ones join the game. Wild symbols are also part of the regeneration of the removed symbol spaces.
The holy strike feature will replace regular symbols with wilds, multiplier wild or mystery boxes. The mystery boxes will activate when there are five or more on the grid and these reveal regular symbols or produce coins with multiplier values of your bet amount. Collect symbols can grab these values and reactivate the boxes and you may also see extra multipliers applied to the global multiplier and extra spins.
Entry to this bonus session requires three or more bonus symbols and the only real difference between this feature and the base game is that the mystery boxes are persistent until they've been opened. This is a nice touch as even though you might have less than four, they'll stick around and hopefully you'll receive the fifth to activate them and receive the benefits.
If one of your triggering symbols is a super bonus symbol, you'll play the enhanced version with a holy strike arriving with every spin. Outside the UK, players can go straight to the standard bonus game for 100x or choose the super version for 500x.
Mystery boxes can appear anyway on the grid and when you have five or more of them, they activate and reveal something a little special. They might simply provide regular payout symbols or wild symbols, but they could deliver some of the Avalon features. The holy strike feature attacks the grid when you least expect it and as this occurs, you'll notice a few modifications taking place. The strike can randomly replace regular paying symbols with wilds, multiplier wilds or even mystery boxes. There's a good chance that you could pick up some wins thanks to this mini feature.

The basic symbol payouts are pretty good when you consider how much more valuable they will become as the wild multipliers, global multiplier and all the rest of the modifications begin to take place. ELK has made sure that you've got loads of ways to pick up some wins. The bonus games make it easier to grab the bigger payouts thanks to the persistent mystery symbols but I'm not sure if I would be splashing out on the 500x super bonus buy in.
I'm not sure that I've ever criticised the design department over at ELK Studios and I'm not about to start today. This is a beautiful, mysterious garden setting with the grid set into a marble arch. The music is generally quite serene until you make it into the bonus game where things become a little frantic. The animations are top notch and it all looks fantastic on mobile phones as well.
ELK is at it again and it feels like they are simply always at their best. They're fast becoming my favourite developer out there and with a back catalogue that reads like a short list for an award ceremony, who can blame me?
