It appears that multipliers, books and split reels will combine to hopefully create the perfect storm as we head out on a new adventure with yet another intrepid explorer.
To pick up a regular payout in this game, you need matching symbols to land on adjacent reels. Those symbols are made up of royals and pictures, and the highest value is a set of five wilds or main character symbols. For these, you'll get a 5x return. The royal symbols won't return your base bet, and even a couple of the pictures will struggle.
The grid helps things along by using turbo reels, which bring a couple of modifications to the base game and one to the feature bonus. To the left, you see a multiplier, and this can grow up to x10 with each spin. If you land a win whilst this multiplier is present, you feel the benefit.
The split reels can split and double the number of symbols on each reel, and this can happen to all five reels at the same time. Having extra symbols means extra win ways. Finally, there is the bonus boost, and this will help if you trigger the free spins game.
Depending on how your boost goes, you could be looking at up to 25 free spins. To do so, you'll need the red bonus boost and five scatter symbols to trigger the feature. The minimum number is just five free spins.
The base game idea continues into the bonus, but now you have a chance to land extra spins and keep playing for free. The wild book can add extra wilds to the reels, and the track will move you to additional spins when you reach boost symbols.
Outside the UK, players can go straight to the bonus game for 100x.
At the bottom of the game area is a selection of modifications that can help improve the fun factor and win potential. The first is a multiplier which can boost any of your wins by up to 10x with each spin. To the right-hand side, you see the split reels and this can double the number of symbols on each position. The central bonus modifier will give you a boost if you trigger the free spins with that spin.
Three or more scatter symbols will trigger the crystal chamber free spins bonus. Depending on the type of bonus symbol and quantity, you'll have anywhere between 5 and 25 free spins. Boost symbols will move you along the track, and you can pick up extra free plays throughout the bonus feature.
I managed to pick up some pretty good base game wins, and that was largely due to the multiplier that was applied several times to my payouts. The split reels can help out and bring you extra win ways as well. It's nice that the third modifier doesn't simply disappear if you enter the bonus game, and it gets turned into a wild modifier instead. Admittedly, most of my big wins did come from the bonus round, and I walked off with over 120x from one of my expeditions. At best, you could grab 10,000x from this situation.
The Rogue design doesn't always please everybody – it is quite ‘blocky’ and slightly less refined than other developers. That's not to say that it's bad, but some of their slots just feel a little dated. This big stone-carved set of reels is based somewhere in a jungle, and the obligatory tribal music keeps the action feeling authentic as you spin. It's bright and colourful and the animation is slick. It is a fairly simple creation, so your mobile phone shouldn't have any problems keeping up.
Admittedly, I've got a bit of a soft spot for Rogue because it feels like they're trying to do something a little bit different and they've never just followed down the standard route.
