I think I probably said the same when I reviewed Power Vault, but three-reel slots are usually a red flag for me. I have been surprised on occasions, and even though I didn't fall madly in love with the prequel, I know many of you loved it. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see how a Santa hat might make this game a little more intriguing. Surely, there's got to be more to it than just a new theme, hasn't there?
Loading up this game takes you back in time to when slot mechanics were incredibly basic, but the chance of landing a big prize was never far away. Select your bet total, hit the spin button, and you'll see the 3x3 grid crank into action.
You've got some jackpots to the left-hand side and a vault at the top – these come into play in just a moment. First things first, you need to know that the basic payouts are worth anywhere between 1x and 50x for a group of three matching symbols. The symbols must line up in their group along one of the five paylines.
The instant prize symbol has a cash value attached and they’re are worth between 1x and 25x. Instant prizes can land on the first and third reels, but what's wrong with the middle reel? The middle reel is reserved for the collector symbol and if one of these lands along with an instant prize or jackpot, then you pick up the win. Jackpots are worth between 15x and 500x.
The Vault Burst feature can literally explode on the screen when a trail of stars fires out from each of the prize and jackpot symbols and heads towards the vault at the top of the game area. This might instantly trigger the bonus game at this point.
The bonus itself is pleasantly different from the base game and you don't find that very often with just three reels. You need at least one instant prize or jackpot symbol along with a collector symbol to start the game, and along with the original win, you'll get three spins. The spins reset each time you land a prize symbol or a collector symbol.
There’s an extra row at the top of the game area and this presents some multipliers and addition symbols. The multipliers increase wins by up to 5x and the addition symbols will add values of up to 100x.
If you're lucky enough to see a collector symbol land on the central reel, there's a chance that you might be able to pick up a jackpot win. The jackpot prizes are shown to the left-hand side of the game area, and they range from 15x to 500x. You can pick up more than one of these prizes at the same time.
When instant prizes fall and you don't have a collector symbol, there's still a chance for something special to happen. They make their way up to the vault at the top of the screen and can instantly trigger the bonus round. You get three spins, and each time a cash or collector symbol lands, they are reset. During the bonus, you can pick up extra multipliers and additional prize values.
Three reels, five paylines and an 8,000x max win worry me a little, and when you mix these stats with low volatility, I'm automatically thinking this is going to be a long and laborious task. However, Santa's Vault did surprise me on a few occasions, and the instant cash prizes were collected along with jackpots every so often. I might knock the setup a little, but I have to admit that there is potential here for some decent winning action.
Not a lot has changed other than the fact that some snow is falling and some other very obvious nods to the Yuletide season are in place. The soundtrack is a weird mix of childish electronic beats and sleigh bells, which you might find endearing, but I kind of hated! It's not that it's ugly, but I think a developer of Push Gaming’s calibre could have done better. Given the tiny game area and simple mechanics, your mobile phone should cope with this slot just fine.
I wasn't overly complimentary about Power Vault, and it's clear that I haven't been laying on the pleasantries too thick for Santa's Vault either! However, I have to concede that there is win potential here, but it would have been nice to see something slightly less obvious added to this remake. So, would Push Gaming simply stick a Santa hat and some snow on an old title and re-release it? It appears they would.
