Push Gaming felt the need to evolve the retro series and bring all the parts together that we loved from the last two chapters. Those are their words, but it's up to us to decide how we feel about this. It uses a cluster pay system, cascading wins and a lot of high volatility tension to keep the story moving along swiftly.
In this Retroverse, you have a chance to land wins all across the grid thanks to the cluster pays format. A set of five matching symbols will get you a win of between 0.10x and 0.50x. The highest paying group is 17+ matching symbols and the top payers will get you up to 250x.
Wild symbols are the arcade images and these will substitute for all regular symbols. Each one has a multiplier associated with it and this is worth up to 10x. If a multiplier wild helps to create a win, the multiplier is applied, and more than one can come together to boost payouts even further.
The wild mystery symbol substitutes for other symbols, which has three levels that you can achieve. It is determined by the number of clusters that the wild helps to create. As it takes part in wins, it goes through the levels and will reveal multipliers, scatters and magnets.
Instant prize symbols take on coin values worth up to 500x, and a group of five of these will offer you the reward. The magnet symbol will randomly select one of the other paying symbols and attract matching symbols to the same position to create a win.
The light gun can randomly remove two paying symbols, and scatter symbols are imperative if you want to play the free spins feature.
Three or more bonus symbols landing anywhere on the grid will present the free spins feature, and once it's triggered, wild, instant prizes and mystery wilds will stay in place. You get up to 12 free spins and each of the empty positions will spin to land a special symbol.
The special symbols include wild multipliers, mystery wilds, magnets and more. Instant prize symbols will stay in place and are calculated at the end of the game. You can pick up extra spins while you play, and outside the UK, 120x will trigger the feature.
These symbols will substitute for other regular payers and they have three levels to work through. You advance as you keep the wild participating in wins. The first level is an initial multiplier of up to 10x, and you can then begin to reveal scatter symbols and magnet symbols after that. The magnets will pull in the coins or other symbols and help create a cluster win.
Three or more scatter symbols can take you off to play the free spins bonus where you will receive between 6 and 12 free spins. During the feature, you see each of the positions spin individually and special symbols will land. You can have wilds with multipliers, mystery wilds, instant prize symbols, magnets, extra spin symbols, or blanks.
It took a little while to get things started during my session, but once the mystery wilds and magnets joined in, I saw some decent wins landing fairly regularly. It wasn't unheard of to see 16x appear from nowhere. It took me quite a few spins to get the bonus game up and running, and the result there was some entertaining action with a 47x reward. You're going to need to be on the receiving end of one of those crazy runs of spins if you want your balance to grow to 10,000x and achieve the max win though. The high volatility will have a large say in when or if that happens.
