What better way to deliver some wild action than an exploding potato that also adds multiplier figures to individual cells? It all seems fairly standard in my opinion, but perhaps these spuds are hiding some special toppings.
If you'd like to grab a basic win, then you need 5 or more symbols to land in a cluster anywhere on the grid. Their values are worth up to 100x, and these can be assisted by wilds and multipliers.
The exploding wild symbol can randomly land and explode, and remove symbols in a 3x3 multiplier grid. The symbols then pick up multipliers with an initial value of x2. They grow up to 128x to boost future wins.
You can trigger this bonus round when 3 scatter symbols land on the game area, and in return, you get 10 free spins. The multiplier grid that is present when you trigger the game will reset, but new ones that form will become sticky and remain active throughout. Players outside the UK can take a chance on the bonus feature by paying 100x.
As wild symbols land, they can randomly explode and remove symbols in a 3x3 format. As this occurs, the initial starting value of x2 can grow up to a maximum of x128, and if you land wins on those cells, then the multiplier is applied.
10 free spins are yours when 3 scatter symbols land anywhere on the grid, and you can retrigger them as well. The initial multiplier grid that may have been present at the beginning will disappear, but a new one will hopefully form as you play. If this happens, then it'll stick around for the rest of the bonus.
Without the multiplier grid, this potato isn't so hot, because you need it to turn up quite frequently to get anywhere near that 10,000x max win. How often that will happen is the responsibility of the high volatility, and this means that you may see some quiet spins with the occasional big win thrown in for good measure. My top reward was just over 17x, but I did manage to grab fairly frequent prizes.
I'm not certain if there is a slight criminal element to this game, or if the hip hop music playing in the background is simply there to amuse us. The animations are pretty good as the potatoes explode, and you can witness this on your mobile phone to. The background moves from the street into the kitchen as you take on the bonus feature, and the music lifts the tempo a little as well.
Hot Potato Battleground is, for all intents and purposes, quite a conventional affair, but it manages to separate itself from many other cluster pays games with that multiplier grid that can build up exponentially as you play.
