They said they'd be there for you and they weren't lying! Okay, so they've arrived a little late but the cast of Friends is here to help you out when the rain starts to fall and all you fancy doing is taking a few spins on the latest slot release from Light & Wonder.
At your disposal is a scatter pays setup and a plethora of familiar symbology that should take your mind back to those happy days on the couch at Central Perk. Watch out for multipliers worth up to 200x and a max win of 5,000x.
Full review continued below ↓This isn't the first time that the Friends franchise has become the subject of a slot release but there isn't a lot of competition out there and previous editions may well have passed you by. This suggestion from Light & Wonder keeps things quite basic with random multipliers and a free spins bonus that offers a persistent multiplier figure.
One of the most exciting aspects of this game, apart from the scatter pays set up, is the random multiplier worth up to 200x which can land anywhere at any time. For these to make any kind of difference to your balance, you'll need to pick up regular wins and you do that by landing eight matching symbols. The symbols are all fairly familiar and anyone who has watched this series before will recognise the sofa, lobster, chicken and six main characters.
The lowest paying symbols are worth a maximum of 2x and for this, you'll need quite a hefty 12+ matching symbols. The picture symbols offer a growing result that starts with Joey and makes its way up to Rachel.
The total win during any round is multiplied by random multipliers worth up to 200x and this creates your payout. Winning symbols are removed and new ones come down in what is known as a cascade and this will continue until your luck runs out.
Entering the bonus round is fairly simple and only requires three scatter symbols to make it happen. In return, you'll get the basic five free spins but you could get up to 15 when 6 bonus symbols land.
If you'd like to make each spin more likely to trigger the free spins bonus, then you'll have to cough up 40% extra on top of your base bet. Players outside the UK combined directly into the game for 100x.
The bonus continues in exactly the same way as the base game, except for one major difference. The multipliers will build up in a meter to the side of the game area and this increasing figure will help boost your wins quite considerably on a good day.
At any point during the game, you can see a random multiplier figure land on the grid. This is worth up to 200x and will apply to wins that appear at the same time. More than one multiplier can land during a winning sequence to boost your rewards.
Three or more scatter symbols will take you off to play for free and hopefully land bigger cash payouts than you saw during the base game. The reason that this might be possible is that the multiplier figure continues to grow each time it lands throughout the bonus. By the end of your spins, you could see your payouts being multiplied by some incredible amounts.
I didn't feel like my balance was going to make any real progress during the base game as wins were fairly few and far between and when they did occur, they were quite small. The medium volatility feels a little off for my liking as I imagine some large payouts will come along every so often but the rest of the time will be quite nerve-wracking. The bonus game is, without a shadow of a doubt, the most profitable part of the creation with its increasing multiplier figure.
The background providing the setting for this slot is everything you could have hoped for and it brings back some very familiar memories. Everything from the kitchen area in the girls' apartment is here, including the little frame around the peep hole on the front door. The attention to detail is pretty incredible but it could simply be a photograph that's received a filter. All of the symbols are recognisable elements from the series and of course, you've got the six main characters. Each of them has their own catchphrase when a win is formed.
I never expect too much innovation when it comes to TV/movie-themed games. Developers have spent a lot of time and money getting the rights for these games and it usually feels like they've won the war at this point and don't have to add anything else. Fans of this show will probably be wanting more when it comes to details and for me, I was hoping for more in terms of integrated features that brought the characters to life once again. It's not a bad effort but it could have gone a hell of a lot further.
