Da Block Review

Climbing a tower block without a lift isn't everybody's idea of a good time. However, when each floor can present you with huge prizes, you might think that the walk was worth it. Let's see if you feel the same by the end of this review.

Gameplay & Features

There are six reels and eight rows to play with, and the number of win ways changes, depending on how many symbols land. Some of the positions are filled with blockers, and that's what determines your payout potential.

Regular symbols only provide you with rewards worth up to 2.0x, but these figures grow along with the progressive multiplier. Wild symbols substitute for regular payers.

Six or more prize symbols will trigger the hold ‘n’ spin feature, and here, you can pick up wins worth up to 500x your base bet as the reels continue to spin and land prizes. If you go three spins without a prize, it's game over.

When the game ends, things start to get really interesting. You're now taken to a crash scenario where you can gamble all of your winnings on each of the reels in a crash format to see if you boost your prizes or get too greedy.

Bonus Game

Other than the crash hold ‘n’ spin feature, there's also a free spins bonus. You'll need three or more scatter symbols to trigger the game, and you'll see it continue in very much the same way as the base game.

I'm not quite sure why the direct buy-in is 150x, yet you can go straight to the crash respins for just 50x. It's also worth mentioning that you can trigger the respins from within the free spins bonus.

Crash Respins

This feature begins as a respins game with a chance to land big prizes all over the grid. Once you've gone three spins without seeing a cash symbol land, you're taken to play the crash element. You can choose just one reel, or you can play all of them at the same time in a crash format. You watch the multiplier increase until it either crashes or you cash out.

Free Spins

The free spins bonus strangely costs three times that of the respins game if you're going for the direct buy-in. This bonus continues the base game idea, and you still have a chance of triggering the respins feature as well. It feels a bit anticlimactic after watching that crash feature play out though!

Win Potential

Da Block seemed fairly nonchalant about its respins and free spins, until that crash element appeared. It plays perfectly into our psyche as gamblers, and it's going to be very tempting for some people to want to play all and go for it at the end of the bonus round.

Logic tells me that if you do fancy a gamble, go for the reels that have only picked up a small win during the feature, and perhaps have a gamble on those instead. I tried going for all of them a couple of times, and I walked away with nothing. If you can play sensibly and catch a break, you could leave with 10,000x.

Design

Using a depressing old tower block is one way of offering a ridiculously large game area without making it too confusing. Skywind has done a great job here, and it all makes perfect sense once you get into the feature area. There are a few animations that catch your eye, and not least, the cockroach that crawls around the brickwork – nasty.

Our Verdict

Mixing slots and crash gaming is certainly innovative, and this might go down in many people's memories as where it all began. While games like Bling Kong merge the two in a slightly more subtle way, Da Block offers no nuanced segue. Both formats are incredibly popular, and I don't see why we've waited so long to see them join forces like this. Da Block is, without a doubt, worthy of your attention.
